When the water temperature falls below 10°c/50°f you should start feeding your fish a wheat germ based food. This type of food is vegetable based meaning it can be digested quickly and easily by the fish, this leads in turn to less fish waste & healthier fish. The fish foods you will have been feeding your fish during the warm months will stay in the fish digestive system for longer and can cause severe problems to the fish.

Some wheatgerm food also contains garlic. The addition of garlic diffuses through the skin of the fish and any parasites which may be present react to these compounds by swimming away, reducing the risk of infestation.

When the water temperature falls below 4-5°c you should consider stopping feeding the fish completely.
